Fine Feathered Friends!

Good morning, everyone! Sometimes stamping is simply about fun and fantasy, and that's the case today! The challenge this week on Late Night Stampers is "Birds of a Feather" -- anything is acceptable as long as it has a bird on it! Humm ... I'm thinking! Humm ... feathers? And then, there in front of me I saw my daughters craft box and low and behold, what was peeking from the top of the box? FEATHERS!!!! "Why not!", I said to myself. And so I did!

I made this first card using the On Board So Tweet Chipboard set, Good Morning Sunshine DSP and the Hope Happens stamp set. I made the grass by cutting a narrow strip of Kiwi Kiss cardstock and stamped the sentiment with Black Stazon ink. I took my paper snips and made tiny slits all across the top. I used my bone folder to slightly curl the paper and it also helps to break up the fibers a bit so it's more pliable. I attached it to the card base using SNAIL adhesive. And then my fingers went to town flicking and smooshing and curling and ruffling until I had a "grass" look that I liked. I covered the body of the bird with some DSP, using an Anywhere Glue Stick. I sanded the edges down a bit and sponged on some Chocolate Chip ink. The eye is a Rhinestone Brad. I punched a small hole with the Crop-a-Dile and inserted the yellow feather through the hole, securing to the back with adhesive tape. I laid the blue feather on the back and again secured with tape. The legs are sponged with Chocolate Chip Craft Ink and the beak with Summer Sun Classic ink. The legs were attached with SNAIL adhesive and the body and beak were fastened down with Stampin' Dimensionals! What fun!

Okay, now for the second card today. Since the Late Night Stampers mascot is an owl, I just had to do another feathered friend owl. Again using the chipboard and DSP and the techniques outlined above, I covered the owl and then attached black feathers for wings. The eyes were created with Jumbo Eyelets (Antique Brass) and Rhinestone Brads.  The moon was cut with the Circle Scissor Plus and the edges sponged with Chocolate Chip Ink. The sentiment, also from Hope Happens, was stamped with Chocolate Chip ink.

There you go -- two new feathered friends ready to bring a smile to someone's face!

Isn't This The Cutest?

Isn't this the most darling little wristlet? I saw this in a Kohl's ad and immediately knew I had to create it using Jackie Topa's fabulous Faux Alligator Skin Technique and the Top Note Die!

So, here's my version! I just can't stop looking at it, it's so darned cute! It's the perfect size for a Gift Card holder or any little special sweet treat! I used 3 Top Note Diecuts and a Box #2 Diecut (all from Chocolate Chip). Cut the top flaps off the box so you have an open-top box and then attach the Top Note Dies with Sticky Strip. The third Top note forms the purse flap. I used one of the new Soho Designer Hardware pieces for the clasp (along with a little handy-dandy Velcro). The wrist strap is 1/4" Chocolate Chip ribbon inserted through a jumbo eyelet! It's quick and easy and oh, so cute! Washington Apple Meets Flower Fancy!

Our task for the Late Night Stampers challenge this week was to create quick and simple cards that could be offered for a beginning class. I decided to go with one Designer Series Paper Pack and One Stamp Set plus a Greeting Set to keep it even simpler (KISS = Keep It Simple Stamper). I choose Washington Apple DSP, the beautiful Flower Fancy Stamp set as well as the Thank You Kindly Stamp set (since I always need thank-you cards anyway). The coordinating colors in Washington Apple DSP are Riding Hood Red, So Saffron, Pumpkin Pie and Bashful Blue.

This first card uses a fun, graphic print from the DSP pack along with Brocade Blue and Riding Hood Red mats and a little 3/8" Bashful Blue Taffeta Ribbon. I used the Stamp-a-ma-Jig for all three cards to make sure I was positioning the outline stamp correctly over the first stamp. Click on any photo to see it larger. I also tore the bottom edge of the Whisper White and Riding Hood Red layers.

This second card uses the wider stripe pattern from the DSP and some of the So Saffron 5/8" Grosgrain ribbon from Sale-a-bration. Both of the two-step flower stamps used Pumpkin Pie Ink. The sentiment is stamped with Black Stazon ink.

This final card is my favorite of the day, I think. It's quick and simple but very bold and dramatic with it contrasting colors. I used the flower cluster from the stamp set and colored directly on the rubber with a So Saffron and Mellow Moss Marker. The outline stamp was stamped with Black Stazon ink. The card base is Basic Black and the first layer is Riding Hood Red with the side edge punched with the Scallop Eyelet Border Punch. The DSP is the polka-dot pattern. The sentiment was stamped on a scrap of Whisper White and punched out with the Large Oval Punch and then layered on a Basic Black Scallop Oval punchie. I finished it off with some 1/4" Black Grosgrain ribbon and a bow! Just lovely!

Awesome Color Combo for Spring!

Good morning, everyone! I made these cards several days ago but have been so incredibly busy there hasn't even been time to post! So, just for you this morning, this fun color combination -- great for spring! I saw these colors together in an online ad and knew immediately that I needed to combine them in some projects.

The colors are Apricot Appeal, Cameo Coral, and Rose Red! Isn't this fresh and fun for spring? The stamp set is Petal Pizzaz, another fun, almost retro, look for spring! This first card is 5 1/4" square, perfect for slipping into one of the Stampin' Up! Square envelopes. I used the Scallop Circle Die and the Big Shot, along with the Circle Scissor Plus (I wasn't going to get this but now that I have it, I'm sold!). The sentiment is from Hope Happens. The 1" Double Stitched Rose Red Grosgrain ribbon is cinched up and tied with a bit of Linen Thread. Of course, I couldn't just stop with the front of the card but had to continue my design to the inside as well. What do you think?

This second card uses the Emboss-Resist technique! Isn't it pretty and soft? The main focal image (with all the stamped flowers) began as a piece of Apricot Appeal cardstock. I stamped one of the flowers using Versamark Ink and then heat set it with the Heat Tool. Using a brayer, I applied Cameo Coral ink over the top. As you can see, the areas that had been stamped with Versamark "resist" the darker ink and the light color shows through. Once I had the brayered color applied evenly, I again stamped over the top with Rose Red and more Cameo Coral. This is a fun technique and if you've not tried it before, you really ought to brush off your heat tool and experiment! It's fun to watch the color come through! The sentiment on this card is from Simply Fabulous and yes, I stamped on the inside as well!

More Stamping and Smooshing!

Oh my goodness, I am having fun with this (new to me) technique. I'm not even sure it's a technique really ... it's just stamping, on stamping, on stamping and then some sponging! I first showed this to you last week with THIS PROJECT! And I have another today using a different color scheme and stamp set!

For today's card, I used the new Friends 24-7 stamp set, the En Francais Background stamp, and Ballet Blue, Orchid Opulence and Certainly Celery inks and cardstock.

I stamped the Background Stamp text with Ballet Blue on Whisper White Cardstock. I then stamped the flourish with Certainly Celery and the flower with Orchid Opulence. I tore the top edge away and curled and distressed the torn edge to give it even more texture and dimension. Then taking all three colors, I sponged and smooshed more color all over the Whisper White layer, making sure to get color on the back-side of the curls as well.

I stamped the sentiment with Black Stazon Ink onto the next layer of Orchid Opulence and then sponged all three colors onto this layer as well to give it a mottled look. I attached the Whisper White layer with SNAIL adhesive. The Brocade Blue 5/8" Grosgrain Ribbon is wrapped around the first two layers, brought to the top of the card and the ends inserted into the new Jumbo Grommet (available April 1st from the Occasions Mini Catalog), tied and trimmed. This entire assembly is then attached to the Ballet Blue Card Base.

Now, for the inside (this is so much fun!). This technique is called Faux Tearing! Isn't it beautiful! It looks like a torn layer but it's all done on one layer! This is great especially for the inside of a card where you don't necessarily want the extra bulk and thickness that multiple layers would give. To do this, you tear a piece of scrap paper (I used two post-it notes stuck together so there was already some temporary adhesive on the scrap) and you simply tear it like you would any layer. You lay that on the inside layer of Whisper White cardstock and attach it with temporary adhesive. You then just begin stamping, sponging and smooshing like you did on the front of the card, only this time you won't be tearing the layer. When you have the color applied the way you want, you simply peel up your scrap paper that you were using as a "mask" and ... viola! Faux tearing! It really is so much fun (be prepared for inky fingers)! This layer was then attached to the inside of the card using SNAIL adhesive.

This card was fun, easy and (at least I think) oh, so pretty! What more can you ask for?

Oh the Things You Can Do with Ribbon!

Hello everyone! This week's Late Night Stampers Challenge is to create something with ribbon! Now this challenge is right up my ally! I've been told that I can't do anything without putting ribbon on it (not true, I think I made a card in 1994 that didn't use ribbon - LOL). Anyway, here is one of the cards I created for this week's challenge. It's a BIG card, measuring a full 8.5 x 5.5". The lovely Ribbon Flower would just overpower a smaller sized card. I began with a base of Riding Hood Red, a layer of Chocolate Chip and another layer using Candy Lane Designer Series Paper (with Chocolate Chip inked around the edges). The circle was cut using my new Circle Scissor Plus (love it!) and the stem is from On Board So Tweet chipboard pack. I sponged Chocolate Chip Craft Ink onto the chipboard (and dried it with my Heat Tool). I tied a bit of Riding Hood Red 3/8" Taffeta ribbon to the stem and then attached the entire thing to the card using both SNAIL and Sticky Strip Adhesive. The sentiment is from Hugs & Wishes.

The Ribbon Flower is a trick we learned at Convention last year. It works best with the wider ribbons so this 1 1/4" Pink Pirouette Grosgrain ribbon is perfect. I took about 18" of ribbon and basted all along one edge with sewing thread and a needle. You then simply pull the basting thread tight until it all gathers and then form it into a circle. You can arrange the folds and pleats to hide where the two edges meet. It's really very easy and fun! I attached the Pretties Kit flower and Half-Back pearl using Crystal Effects and added some Dazzling Diamonds Glitter in the middle for just a bit more Bling! (By the way, my 9-year-old daughter told me the other night that moms shouldn't use words like "bling" -- takes the meaning out of them when moms use them, she says - LOL). I attached the ribbon flower to the card using Pop-Up Glue Dots!

Inspiration is EVERYWHERE!

Hello everyone! I've said it so many times -- you can get inspiration for your cards and projects EVERYWHERE! I was inspired for today's artwork by this beautiful top from Christopher & Banks. The beautiful colors, the images all blurred together and the impressionistic feel of this top all cried out to me, "create me in a card"! So I did! And here's my final result! What do you think?

Okay, I know you're all going to write and wonder how I achieved this look. So here you go -- directions and pictures! Have fun trying all this sponging and overlaying of images -- I know I did! Click on any photo to see it larger.

The colors I used are Apricot Appeal, Rose Red, Cameo Coral and Elegant Eggplant (how delicious are those?). I began with a piece of Apricot Appeal cardstock and stamped the En Francais Background in Elegant Eggplant. I then tore the cardstock down the right edge and stamped the large Rose from Fifth Avenue Floral with Rose Red Ink. I also stamped a few of the small Flower from God's Beauty using Cameo Coral Ink. Then I went crazy with sponging (it's so much fun to see the colors blend and merge right before your eyes). I sponged a lot of Rose Red over the rose image and some around the edges and then sponged on Cameo Coral and Elegant Eggplant, just trying to get the shading and blending effect that I saw in my inspiration photo.

I also sponged the same colors on my next layer of Cameo Coral. I ran a length of 1" Double Stitched Rose Red Grosgrain Ribbon at the bottom of the top layer and then attached the top layer to the 2nd layer with SNAIL adhesive. I wrapped the ribbon around the edges and brought them carefully up through the opening in the new Silver Jumbo Grommet (available April 1st in the Occasions Mini Catalog). You need to be careful that you don't snag the ribbon on the prongs of the Grommet. When I had the ribbon just the way I wanted it, I put the whole thing on Piercing Mat from the Crafter's Tool Kit to push the prongs through the layers of cardstock and ribbon. Using my Bone Folder, I folded the ends of the prongs down on the back of the card, turned the whole thing over and tied a simple overhand knot in the ribbon and then trimmed the ends.

  I mounted the entire thing on an Elegant Eggplant Cardbase and attached another sponged and stamped piece of Apricot Appeal cardstock to the inside of the card. The butterfly was created using God's Beauty (a Level 1 Hostess Set), stamping it on Apricot Appeal cardstock with Black Stazon Ink. I then did the same sponging over the butterfly. I cut it out, covered the entire thing with 2-way glue and dipped it in Dazzling Diamonds Glitter. It is attached to the card using Stampin' Dimensionals!

WOW -- what a fun project this was to do. You sure get your fingers inky, but who care's! I hope you'll try this technique soon and share your results with me. I would love to see what you create!

Wagon Full of Fun

Hello everyone! Don't you just love this little ducky from the new set, Wagon Full of Fun (available April 1st from the Occasions Mini Catalog)? This little guy just looks so proud of himself and the egg-ceptional egg that he's created for Easter! Let's only hope he can make it to his destination without hitting any bumps!

I used Wagon Full of Fun and the Scallop Oval Punch from the Occasions Mini Catalog. I stamped the wagon on Close to Cocoa CS and then cut off the handle and attached it to the other side so the duck could pull it in the right direction (LOL). The duck is colored in with Stampin' Write Markers and then cut out and applied to the card. His wing was stamped again on a scrap and attached with a dimensional so he could hold the wagon handle. The wheels are Antique Brass Jumbo Eyelets. The egg is colored in with markers and DD glitter was applied with a 2-way glue pen. The Egg Hunt Wheel is rolled on the Almost Amethyst CS. The DSP is Tea Party and the Certainly Celery Ribbon is from the SAB bundle. The grass and Sky were sponged using Garden Green and Baja Breeze. I used my own homemade Cloud Template (made from Scallop Circle Punches) to give the puffy-cloud effect. See THIS post for more information on how to do make clouds!

 

I've been busy putting the Big Shot Bonanza kits together and you'll be pleased to know that all kits that have been ordered are ready to go and will be dropped in the mailbox this afternoon!
